Online Microteaching Reflection

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

Teaching an online lesson has emphasised the critical role of technology in modern education. In a rapidly evolving world, technology has become the foundation of learning, allowing educators to rise above physical boundaries and reach students globally. My recent online teaching experience has been both enlightening and challenging.

One of the aspects I like about online teaching is the flexibility it provides. It allows students to access content at their convenience, catering to diverse schedules and learning styles. Additionally, technology enabled me to incorporate multimedia elements.

However, the absence of direct face-to-face interaction did pose certain challenges. It became evident that reading students' non-verbal cues and identifying their level of engagement proved to be more complex in an online context.

Through this experience, I acquired new skills, most notably proficiency with Blackboard. Navigating its features, such as discussion boards and presenting tools, was instrumental in managing the virtual classroom effectively. This newfound skill is invaluable for future online teaching.

I would make some adjustments in my next online lesson. While the PowerPoint presentation and YouTube video served their purposes, I would diversify my instructional materials to cater to various learning preferences. Incorporating interactive quizzes, or breakout sessions could enhance engagement. The choice of tools should align with the lesson's objectives and the students' needs.

Using a PowerPoint presentation allowed me to provide a structured overview of the lesson's key points. It helped maintain a clear flow of information. The YouTube video added a multimedia dimension, enhancing visual and auditory learning.

This online teaching experience has enhanced my adaptability as an educator. It forced me to think creatively and resourcefully to engage students in a virtual environment. The skills I developed, particularly in using Blackboard, are transferable to traditional classroom settings, making me a more versatile educator.

In conclusion, online teaching is a powerful educational tool, but it comes with its set of challenges. Embracing technology is essential, but educators must carefully select and integrate tools to maximize their effectiveness. The experience has broadened my pedagogical perspectives and equipped me with skills that will prove beneficial in both online and traditional classroom settings. As technology continues to shape the future of education, educators must evolve alongside it, ensuring that no student is left behind in the digital age.
